Yorkshire's opportunities and challenges to be discussed at event

A conference to discuss Yorkshires post-Brexit future, its place in the Northern Powerhouse and the contribution it can make to the UK economy will be held in March.

The event, in partnership with ResPublica, will bring together leading figures from across the region and beyond to consider subjects including Brexit challenges and opportunities, Yorkshire devolution, productivity, ensuring growth benefits all and pan-Northern co-operation.

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leader of Bradford Council, said:

Yorkshire is approaching a critical juncture as we prepare for Brexit while also making the strong case for One Yorkshire devolution. This is a timely moment to bring people together from across the region and beyond to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead.

The recent success in attracting Channel 4s new headquarters underlines what we can achieve when we work together and make the positive case for investment in our region and this event will be an opportunity to do just that.

Cllr Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council and member of the Combined Authority, said:

Decisions taken in 2019 will shape the future of Yorkshire and the wider North of England and this conference will be an important moment where we can come together and discuss how we can move this region forward.

While uncertain times lie ahead, we are very confident that with the right support this region can deliver for its own communities and the UK as a whole and this event will help to demonstrate just that.

Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, said:

Through our merger to form a single Local Enterprise Partnership covering York, North and West Yorkshire by 2020, we are already demonstrating our determination to be in the best position possible to deliver for the people of this region in the years ahead.

This conference will be a great opportunity to bring people together from a range of organisations, public and private, to exchange ideas and set out a clear vision for what we want to achieve.

Phillip Blond, Director of ResPublica, said:

We are excited to be working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership to stage a conference which will set the agenda for the region as it approaches a profound period of change.

The North of England represents a huge opportunity for the UK as a whole and this event will help shine a spotlight on the exciting developments which lie ahead.

Further details of the conference, including the venue and speakers, will be set out in the coming weeks.
