Completion of work at Leeds Station

Statement from the Mayor of west Yorkshire on the announcement by the Department for Transport of the completion of work at Leeds Station

5 January 2022

Responding to the announcement by the Department for Transport of the completion of work at Leeds Station, West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said:

“I’m delighted to see the completion of much-needed work at Leeds Station to deliver more platform space for longer trains, and a better environment for passengers on the main concourse.

“The completed work will ease some of the capacity issues facing the Station, but the track capacity in and around the station continues to limit the number of trains which can serve the City.

"I hoped that the government's much-promised Integrated Rail Plan would provide a long term resolution to this challenge with a new station in Leeds city centre, allowing greater rail capacity between towns and cities across the north to be achieved.

"I remain disappointed that the IRP did not live up to its promises. I will continue to make the case to DfT and Ministers about the need to expand Leeds Station, and deliver a better rail network for the people of West Yorkshire and beyond."
