Almost 6,000 cars a week off city centre roads thanks to park and ride

With most people back from their holidays and schools finally open again after the summer break, commuters coming into Leeds are being encouraged to make use of two bus park and ride schemes as they travel into the city centre. �

Both schemes are collaborations between the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Council and First. The most recently opened comes into Leeds from Temple Green and was launched three months ago. It complements the scheme running from Elland Road that serves commuters coming in from the M621 and west of Leeds.

Increase

Buses from both sites run from every 10 minutes and, in the past week alone, they took more than 5,780 cars off Leeds� city centre roads. This is an increase of more than 600 alone for Temple Green from the last week of summer. �

A third park and ride scheme is planned for Stourton, south east of Leeds, with the public being asked for their views on this at a series of events from this week.

Cllr Keith Wakefield, West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Chair, said: �Park and ride schemes are taking thousands of cars out of Leeds� city centre every week. Not only is this reducing congestion and speeding up journey times for commuters but it is also improving air quality so the city is a nicer place to live and work. �

�More commuters are making use of park and ride every week and I�d recommend anyone who usually drives into Leeds via these routes gives it a go. We�ve had great feedback from users already and we�d love to see even more people taking advantage of this travel option.� �

Cllr Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: �The runaway success of Temple Green shows that there is an appetite for further park and ride across the city. We�re about to consult on our proposals for our next park and ride at Stourton and I�d urge residents to look at our plans and give us their views.� �

Elland Road

Elland Road Park & Ride first opened in June 2014. It runs every 10 to 15 minutes, seven-days-a-week from opposite Elland Road Police Station (postcode: LS11 8TU).�

Fares are �3 for a day ticket � reduced to �2.70 when five or more are bought on a smart travelcard � and up to three children can travel free with every fare-paying adult.�

Free WiFi is available on all buses and there is a staffed, heated waiting facility with toilets and a baby changing area as well as ticket machines on site. Journeys take about 10 minutes, in total.

Temple Green

Temple Green Park & Ride is the latest addition to Park & Ride in Leeds. Now in its 14th week, it runs every 10 to 15 minutes Monday to Saturday from the Aire Valley, near junction 45 of the M1 (postcode: LS9 0PS).�

Fares are �3 for a day ticket � reduced to �2.70 when five or more are bought on a smart travelcard � and up to three children can travel free with every fare-paying adult.�

Free WiFi is available on all buses and there is a staffed, heated waiting facility with toilets and a baby changing area as well as ticket machines on site. Journeys take about 15 minutes, in total.
