Cllrs Peter Box & James LewisLocal business leaders, politicians and community representatives were on hand on Monday 16 February to witness an official ceremony to mark the completion of Castlefords new 6m bus station.

Opening on Sunday 22 February, the new Castleford Bus Station will provide the 12,000 people who use it every day with a more comfortable waiting environment, better information and improved facilities. It has been developed to support the regeneration and growth of Castleford and the Five Towns area and means Castleford has an impressive new gateway.

First of many

Unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion, Cllr Peter Box, Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leader of Wakefield Council said Castleford Bus Station was the first major transport project completed under the West Yorkshire Combined Authority banner but was the first of many.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee Chair, Cllr James Lewis described the new bus station as impressive and said facilities for Castleford bus users were now in line with the Combined Authoritys other modern, Metro bus stations across West Yorkshire.

In addition to a covered waiting concourse, the new bus station features 24-hour monitored CCTV coverage, electronic departure information, passenger help points and space for a retail outlet.

Partnership

Funded in partnership with Wakefield Council, overwhelming support was received for the Bus Station at public exhibitions and consultation events. The old Albion street bus station closed at the end of January last year and construction started in March 2014.

In line with the West Yorkshire Combined Authoritys commitment to developing an improved transport network, two other major transport projects are progressing in the Wakefield District. Work is underway on the Pontefract Northern Link Road and Wakefield Eastern Relief Road, which are both being delivered through the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund designed to supporting growth and job creation and unlock housing development through better transport infrastructure.
