Earn it campaign launched to inspire training uptake in key sectors

Following the success of its recent #futuregoals careers campaign inspiring young people about their future job decisions, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (The LEP) has launched a new adult careers campaign to highlight the benefits of learning for adults.

Based around the online resource at www.The-Lep.com/EarnIt the campaign highlights the availability of careers advice and the growing range of skills and training available to adults, including those already in work.

Manufacturing and engineering, digital and construction are all growing sectors within our region. People visiting www.The-Lep.com/EarnIt can find out more about the kinds of jobs available in these sectors, the skills required for those jobs and the courses and training available for people can acquire those new skills.

Leeds City Region is home to around 7,300 manufacturing businesses that design, create and build high-quality goods and products that are used all over the world. Those businesses employ people with all sort of skills and abilities, from designers to machinists and from accountants to quality controllers.

With HS2 alone forecast to generate up to 28,000 construction jobs in our region , the construction sector is another major local employer with a wide range of roles stretching far beyond the traditional on-site jobs.

And 15,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the region's digital sector over the next seven years, in addition to the 100,000-plus that already exist.

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leader of Bradford Council, said:

"West Yorkshire and the Leeds City Region has an impressive manufacturing and engineering heritage, and remains at the cutting edge.

"In 2017, Brighouse's Blackhall Engineering manufactured the world's largest water gate valve, weighing 11 tons and standing 40 feet tall for a Texas drinking water system. And Reliance Engineering produced a gear wheel for the Rosetta satellite which was sent to outer space, 500 million km away from where it was made in Huddersfield.

"By visiting the 'Earn It' web link, on the LEP website people can find out more about the kinds of jobs that could be available in manufacturing and engineering as well as the construction and digital sectors, and how they can obtain an action plan to increase their skills through training courses and career advice.

"I would advise anyone who is looking for a change in their career, who is keen to learn new skills and who wants to broaden their horizons, to visit Earn It and find out about the huge range of opportunities that exist across our region."

The campaign is part of a Department for Education-led Career Learning Pilot that aims to identify which interventions are the most effective for inspiring adults into careers and training. Leeds City Region (LCR) is one of five areas selected by the Department for Education to be part of the pilot, the outcomes of which will be used to design the National Retraining Scheme.

The pilot will testing the two key themes. The first, outreach, looks at what engagement activity succeeds in encouraging adults currently in employment or re-entering employment who have a level 2 qualification, to consider their next career/learning steps at level 3 and above. The second theme, cost, investigates what level of funding subsidy (25%, 75% or 100%) will encourage individuals to pay for their learning."

"Our team of National Careers Service Advisers based across the region are pleased to support the Earn it campaign by helping people make better informed career choices and supporting them to develop their career plan.

"We will encourage individuals to look at the opportunities available in the growth sectors by undertaking activities such as exploring the local labour market, identifying suitable learning and progression opportunities, where to look for jobs, how to apply and be successful in securing employment or increased earnings.

Launched in February this year, the LEP's #futuregoals initiative was a high profile regional careers campaign designed by young people for young people to inspire careers choices and raise awareness of opportunities in our key sectors. The campaign reached over 1 million people and was supported by a dedicated programme of school employer engagement enabled by LEP's Enterprise Adviser Network
