New Public Transport Hub for South Elmsall

New Public Transport Hub for South Elmsall

South Elmsalls new public transport hub is now complete and open to passengers.

Located on the site of the towns old bus station, the new transport hub features new shelters, improved lighting and yournextbus real-time departure screens. Its 4 metre-high hard-to-miss, illuminated Metro totem is fitted with a digital clock and transport information panels.

Cycle parking has been updated, and there are now better pedestrian links between the bus and rail stations. A re-designed pedestrian crossing makes it easier for passengers to access to Doncaster Road.

The 320,000 scheme, developed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Wakefield Council and constructed by Amey, provides a focal point for public transport journeys to and from South Elmsall.

Cllr Keith Wakefield, Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authoritys Transport Committee said:

South Elmsalls new transport hub will mean noticeable and lasting improvements for the 193,000 bus passengers who used the towns old bus station each year so Im delighted to see it open.

When we carried out a consultation on the scheme, we had an excellent 94% response from local businesses and residents supporting the scheme so its fantastic to be able to support the local economy by improving access to the local transport network through high-quality projects such as this."

Cllr Peter Box Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority said:

Its good to see another investment in local public transport facilities that not only provides real benefits for South Elmsall residents but also provides important interconnectivity for transport services across the Wakefield District and West Yorkshire.

Providing the transport network that connects people to jobs, education, training and opportunities is key to West Yorkshire Combined Authority achieving the aims of good growth set out in our Strategic Economic Plan, and this new hub is just the latest part of that network.
