People's views wanted on York's station plans

People in York are being encouraged to have their say on plans to transform the front of the city's rail Station.

Under the proposals, the redundant Queen Street Bridge would be removed to create the space for the improvements, which include separate arrival points for cars, buses, taxis and cyclists, re-sited taxi-rank, drop-off points and short stay parking, car-free public spaces in Team Room Square and a new Station Square.

The scheme, which would also reveal parts of the City Wall, and York's railway heritage buildings is part of the Combined Authority's West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund programme of schemes designed to support inclusive economic growth and the creation of jobs across Leeds City Region and the creation of new housing.

York Council is working with Network Rail, the Intercity East Coast Mainline franchise and engineering and design consultancy Arup to develop a master plan for the area, together with a planning application for the first phase of the works.

As well as improving the station and journey times for buses, taxis, cyclist, pedestrians and motorists, the York Central scheme will help the development a new business district to the east of the site. This will support significant jobs growth by making it possible for existing businesses to grow and enabling new companies to relocate to the city. The new highway infrastructure will also make possible the development of up to 2,500 homes close to the city's rail station and improvements at the front of the station will create a new and enhanced city centre gateway.

Walking workshops

There are also a number of walking workshops, organised with York Civic Trust, to explore the heritage of York Railway Station, as well as the proposed changes. These will take place on Wednesday 27 June and Saturday 30 June. Find out more and sign up.
