Upgrade to overspill car park at Elland Road Park and Ride

Commuters using Leeds� popular Elland Road Park and Ride will be able to take advantage of an upgrade to the overflow parking area from Wednesday 3 February.

With the existing, 425-space car park frequently being filled to capacity, increasing numbers of passengers have been using an unmade-up area as an overflow car park. To improve conditions for those people, West Yorkshire Combined Authority has worked with Leeds City Council to fund a new, surfaced overspill car park with over 100 marked out spaces, floodlighting, CCTV coverage and pedestrian access point.

Cllr Keith Wakefield, Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee said: �Elland Road Park and Ride has proved so popular with people travelling into Leeds that we have agreed an expansion plan that will include 375 additional spaces and a new, heated customer waiting facility.

�As work on that extension is due to start in the spring with completion expected by autumn this year, we wanted to provide an interim improvement for the increasing numbers of people now having to use the overspill car park. When it opens on Wednesday those people will be able to park in the 100-plus clearly marked bays on a new, mud-free surface.

�I have been pleased to see the ongoing growth in numbers of people using the Park & Ride because 500 or more cars are being parked Elland Road Monday to Friday rather than being driven into the city centre is helping to reduce traffic in in Leeds and the cost of congestion to businesses in the city.�

Demand

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council�s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning said:�Elland Road was the first scheme of this type in Leeds, so it�s great to see it doing well.

�Demand has been so high that people are regularly parking at the overflow site, so it was important that we provided an overflow parking area as an interim measure until the expansion opens in autumn.

�In the light of the Elland Road scheme�s success we are also developing a new, 1,000-space park and ride at Temple Green in east Leeds through West Yorkshire Combined Authority�s �1bn Growth Deal Transport Fund.�

When it opens in the autumn, the expanded Elland Road Park and Ride will have 375 extra parking spaces and new waiting area with ticket machines, real-time information, toilets and baby changing facilities. The new, fully-lit parking area will have CCTV coverage and will include more spaces for electrical vehicle charging as well.

Launched in June 2014, Elland Road Park and Ride is open Monday to Saturday (except on Saturday Match Days) from 7am to 9.15pm with buses running every 10 minutes until 7pm. Tickets for the 10-minute journey to and from the city centre cost from just �2.70 per day. Customers can make multiple journeys on each Adult Day Ticket and can take up to three children up to the age of 16 with them for free.

Services towards the city centre stop at Meadow Road/Sweet Street Great Wilson Street and Boar Lane (stop T9) while return journeys leave from Boar lane stopping at Great Wilson Street on the way back to Elland Road.
