A total of 104 official parking spaces are being created at Wentworth Terrace and nearby Railway Terrace for station users. Unused Wakefield Council-owned garages have been demolished to make way for the additional spaces.

Part of the current Wentworth Terrace car park will closed on Monday 4 September for the work to take place. The scheme is being carried out take place in two phases, to ensure half of the existing parking remains open throughout the work.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Chair Cllr Keith Wakefield said:By extending station car parks such as this project at Fitzwilliam and the recently completed car park extension at South Elmsall, we are supporting sustainable economic and employment growth by making it easier for people with to get to and from the main urban centres where new, good-quality jobs are being created.

This benefits commuters and improves connections across West Yorkshire and the City Region, and by encouraging more train travel into and between the City Regions urban centres by rail for other purposes, helps reduce congestion and the air pollution that goes with it.

?Cllr Matthew Morley, Wakefield Councils Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said:We appreciate this work is likely to cause some disruption and were sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

"However the long-term benefits will make this worthwhile. Extra parking at the train station has been needed for a long time. The project will help in the long term to cut congestion in the local area caused by cars parking on the busy neighbouring roads and this will improve safety.

Scheduled to be completed in Spring 2018,the scheme is part of the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund programme and is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Parking at 17 West Yorkshire stations are being extended and reconfigured as part of the programme.
