West Yorks Low Emission Draft Strategy.

The West Yorkshire Authorities have been working for a number of years to bring about improvements in air quality in their individual local authority areas. It was recognised that poor air quality was not limited to a local authority area and that greater improvements could be achieved by the West Yorkshire Authorities working together.

This five year Strategy sets out the collective ambitions and objectives of the West Yorkshire local authorities, together with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and in collaboration with Public Health England to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality to create a healthier place for people to live, work and visit.

  • High levels of air pollution cause health problems such as breathing difficulties and heart conditions and leads to premature deaths
  • Exhaust fumes from traffic, particularly from older diesel vehicles, is one of the main causes of air pollution
  • People inside vehicles and those living and working near busy roads are exposed to the highest levels of air pollution
  • Air pollution in some urban areas of West Yorkshire needs to improve to save lives and meet legal limits on air quality

We know that improving air quality is not going to be easy and we are asking people to make changes to the way they travel and live but by us all doing a little to improve the air we breathe we will make significant improvements to our own health, the health of our children and future generations.

The West Yorkshire Low Emission (WYLES) draft strategy has been developed prior to the release of the latest DEFRA consultation�on their draft plans to improve air quality. The final version of the WYLES Strategy will take account of any recommendations identified in the DEFRA Guidance once it is published. If you would like to take part in the DEFRA consultation, the closing date is 6 November 2015.
