Community group stands up for single mothers in Bradford

Single mothers and women with children in Bradford are being empowered and upskilled, thanks to a local community group and funding from the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin.

Bradford-based organisation, Neesie Community Interest Company, received a near £6,000 from the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund to support single mothers.

At weekly sessions, safeguarding professionals empowered the group with knowledge on topics including anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse awareness, and hate crime.

To support their professional development, each mother has also achieved a Level 2 accredited leadership qualification.

Today (17/02), West Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe OBE, visited Neesie to find out more about how their programme is uplifting women in Bradford.

Speaking at the visit, Deputy Mayor Lowe said:

“Education and prevention is one of the key themes of the Mayor’s recently launched Safety of Women and Girls Strategy.

“Neesie have used their funding to arm these mums with knowledge that will stay with them well beyond the conclusion of this course.

“These women are now advocates for their communities and can affect real change in their local areas.”

Noreen Khan, Director of Neesie said:

“We were delighted to have received funding from the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund. It has enabled us to develop a cohort of mothers to become advocates promoting safer communities.

“It's really important to us that we enable and facilitate individuals to be key components of our society.

“This programme ensured that, given the right nurturing environments, they are now able to excel and play an active part in their local areas.”

A participant of the programme said:

“The programme delivered by Neesie really helped my confidence to grow.

“I have started volunteering my time in my local community and have become active in my daughters' schools to support parental engagement activities.

“It has been a refreshing change and I am so glad that I can begin a new chapter in my life to progress and prosper.”

With money seized from criminals by West Yorkshire Police and prosecutors, the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund directs cash to organisations that are making their local areas safer.

Since 2022, the fund has granted over £1 million to 173 community-based projects tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving, and violence against women and girls.
