Wakefield South East Gateway- Rutland Mills

Development of the Wakefield City Centre South East Gateway is a key priority for Wakefield Council, to raise the national profile of Wakefield within the Cultural and Creative sector and to transform the city’s image by redeveloping Kirkgate as a distinct part of the city centre, which links Wakefield’s retail core with the Waterfront and the new Studios development at Rutland Mills.

This scheme will assist the next phase of regeneration of the South East Gateway and aims to restore historic buildings and create high quality public realm at the Waterfront creating a creative industries jobs hub. The development will complement and take advantage of the significant footfall attracted to the Hepworth Wakefield gallery to create jobs and new businesses thereby increase visitor numbers and increase dwell time for existing visitors to the Hepworth.  A total of 7000m2 of floorspace will be created that will accommodate 219 jobs and the construction activity will generate 15 FTE construction jobs. The proposals will create these new job opportunities, increase training opportunities available in the creative sector and bring more visitors into the city providing an estimated £1.5 million extra into the local economy each year.
