Halifax Town Centre

The A629 Halifax to Huddersfield Corridor Improvement is the largest individual scheme within the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.

This £120m package of schemes along the A629 corridor between Halifax and Huddersfield is driving economic growth by addressing transport and accessibility issues.

This project will provide improved accessibility to the town for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

Connectivity from the north to the town centre will include urban realm improvements, pedestrian and cycle infrastructure and improved coordination of junctions. The improvements to the south and west of town aim to create attractive public spaces and to encourage both the day and night time economy of Halifax. Road junction improvements will increase Eastern access to Halifax and the rail station, unlocking key town centre development opportunities.

This project also focuses on the improvement of bus services through remodelled infrastructure and re-routing of traffic. Buses will follow a town centre bus loop, creating better bus access to the east of the town centre. This work, along with enhanced pedestrian links will improve town centre employment opportunities.

The town centre of Halifax will be improved through pedestrianisation of key shopping areas and creation of new public realm at ‘Piece Gardens’, adjacent to the Square Chapel and Central Library. This will create a cultural quarter from the rail station into the town centre.

This major investment project will make Halifax a place where people want to live, work and study, and will attract investment from a whole range of sectors.
