West Yorkshire Combined Authority are seeking to appoint a Principal Internal Auditor to join our Internal Audit team.

We bring together local councils and businesses, through the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) ensure that our work meets the needs of employers so that everyone in our region can benefit from economic prosperity supported by a modern, accessible transport network, housing and digital connections.

It is an exciting time to be joining the Combined Authority, following the announcement of a £1.8bn devolution deal that has been secured for West Yorkshire. Devolution will enable us to drive up living standards for local communities while tackling the climate emergency and help deliver our commitment to become a net zero carbon city region by 2038.

The Role

Reporting into the Head of Internal Audit, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Helping to build an assurance framework to support the newly devolved Adult Education Budget (AEB)
  • Producing high quality information and reports to a range of stakeholders that will help to drive higher standards of governance, transparency and accountability, this includes reporting to our Governance and Audit Committee
  • Manage a small team of auditors as they work to deliver the agreed annual audit plan which includes the AEB reviews
  • Help to develop the internal audit function in order to drive improvement to internal controls, risk management and corporate governance.

About you

You will have the following key skills, attributes, education and experience

  • The ability to think strategically to provide both assurance and value for money work
  • Strong analytical, evaluation and communication skills
  • Be a qualified CCAB accountant or CMIIA with significant practical experience in a similar role, an understanding of AEB would be desirable, but can be developed within the team
  • Have an extensive understanding of Public Sector Internal Auditing Standards
