It is an exciting time to be joining the Combined Authority, following the delivery of the largest Mayoral devolution deal in England, and the election of the Mayor, Tracy Brabin, in May 2021.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with excellent communications skills who can help raise the profile of the Combined Authority and its work.

The Senior Press Officer will:

  • Play a leading role in the day-to-day running of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority press office, delivering a proactive and reactive press function on behalf of the organisation and the Mayor of West Yorkshire.

  • Respond to and help shape the daily news agenda, advising senior colleagues around media matters, raising the profile of the Combined Authority and informing the media, public and partners about the ways in which the organisation contributes to regional, national and international success.

  • Support the Media Relations Manager by directly line managing a small team of two press officers.


The Role

This is a politically restricted post.

This is a varied role which will suit a flexible individual, proficient at managing multiple projects and working with a range of partners. 

Reporting to the Media Relations Manager, you will:

  • Play a key role in delivering a proactive and reactive press and media relations function on behalf of the Combined Authority, the Mayor of West Yorkshire and the region’s leaders.
  • Alongside the Media Relations Manager, steer the day-to-day running of the press office.
  • Line manage a small team of two press officers.
  • Form strong and robust relationships with journalists, whilst raising the profile of the Mayor of West Yorkshire.
  • Promote the organisation’s successes to relevant audiences through the media, including writing press releases, social media copy and opinion eds.
  • Directly advise senior figures around media matters both within and outside the organisation, shaping and challenging views where appropriate.
  • Be a team player, working in collaboration with colleagues across the wider Communications and Marketing team. 
  • Inform communications and media strategy and approach based on the media agenda and corporate priorities.
  • Play a strategic role in identifying upcoming opportunities and reputational risks, whilst responding to and shaping the daily news agenda.
  • Monitor and evaluate media and political landscape to facilitate excellent responses and key, timely advice to colleagues, our leaders and the Mayor.
  • Be an enthusiastic, passionate advocate for the Combined Authority and the region, proactively seeking opportunities to share our news and increase the importance and relevance of our organisation to our communities and at a national and government level.
  • Facilitate press conferences and manage the media during interviews with local, regional and national journalists.
  • Evaluate and monitor media successes and coverage.
  • Provide a professional out-of-hours service on a rota basis, where you will be the single point of contact for media enquiries and responsible for communications and media relations on behalf of the organisation and the Mayor.

About you

You will have the following skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Be news hungry and passionate about current affairs, politics and West Yorkshire.
  • Be a positive team player with a track record of delivering high-profile comms work in a collaborative environment.
  • Have strong press office or media experience in a busy environment, including excellent writing skills.
  • Have experience of developing targeted communications plans and a track record of securing media coverage to support corporate goals.
  • Confidence when working with senior stakeholders and the ability to win confidence when advising on media matters .
  • Capable of working flexibly and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary communications and marketing team.
