Abraham Moon, a Guiseley-based woollen fabric manufacturer, wanted to lower their energy bills and reduce their environmental impact. Following support from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, they have been able to invest in energy-efficient equipment that will help them to:
Founded in 1837, Abraham Moon is one of the few remaining vertical woollen mills in Great Britain and their high-quality fabrics are used in apparel, furnishings and accessories.
The production of woollen fabrics is an energy intensive process and as fuel costs continue to rise and concerns for climate change grow, the business sought ways to reduce their energy consumption.
Abraham Moon contacted the Combined Authority through Leeds City Council. A meeting with a Resource Efficiency Manager and a free audit helped them to identify areas of the business with a high energy demand and potential cost and carbon saving opportunities.
The firm then received a £13,000 grant to install Variable Speed Drive (VSD) motors on to their wool spinning frames, this is forecast to save them 86,976 kWh of electricity per year and over £10,000 on their energy bills.
It is brilliant to hear how businesses in West Yorkshire are reducing carbon, saving money and increasing their competitiveness.
