In today’s world, being online is more than a convenience - it’s a lifeline. Access to technology can transform how people manage their health, wellbeing, and everyday challenges. Recognising this, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority launched a digital inclusion programme to ensure communities across the region have the skills, tools, and confidence to get online.
One organisation benefiting from this support is Platform 1, a mental health charity in Huddersfield. With guidance from Kirklees Council’s Digital Inclusion Team, Platform 1 secured £4,800 through the UKSPF Digital Capital Gains fund. The grant enabled the charity to purchase tablets, which are now loaned to service users unable to attend the office due to mobility issues or mental health challenges.
These tablets are used to deliver online counselling sessions, giving individuals access to vital support from the comfort and safety of their own homes. This simple intervention has opened up new opportunities for engagement and is making a real difference in the lives of Kirklees residents.
Beyond funding, Kirklees Council is also helping Platform 1 identify a more suitable premises, further strengthening the charity’s ability to serve the community.
This collaboration is a powerful example of how digital inclusion can break down barriers, improve access to essential services, and build a more connected and supported society.
