Reacting to Marcus Osborne being handed a whole-life order for the murders of Katie Higton and Steven Harnett, Alison Lowe, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “My thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the victims of these truly horrendous crimes.

“I welcome today’s sentence and that this evil man will now be unable to harm anyone else, but I know it will offer little comfort to those affected.

“West Yorkshire Police rightly referred themselves to the IOPC due to contact the victims had with them prior to these awful events. I await the outcome of this referral and will raise it with the Chief Constable as soon as possible.”
