The Mayor of West Yorkshire is responsible for the Police and Crime Commissioner function in the region. 

Read on to learn more about how both the Mayor and the Combined Authority are working to create a safer, fairer and more inclusive region for us all.

The Mayor of West Yorkshire set these objectives as part of her policing and crime responsibilities. This ensures the police listen to and serve their communities well. 

The Mayor's role is to meet community needs, build trust and collaborate with groups across the region and the UK to help prevent and reduce crime. It's important to note that the Mayor does not control the police. Instead, she advocates for the people and ensures the police perform their duties effectively.

The Mayor’s Policing and Crime responsibilities

The Mayor of West Yorkshire has key roles in policing and crime. These include ensuring the police force operates effectively and holding the Chief Constable to account.  

The Mayor creates the Police and Crime Plan. This plan outlines the main goals for policing and community safety. The Mayor also issues an annual report covering progress as well as regular meeting with the Police and Crime Panel. 

The Mayor calculates the council tax or budget requirement and maintains the Police Fund. Furthermore, the Mayor is also responsible for appointing, and where necessary, suspending or calling on a Chief Constable to retire or resign.

The Mayor listens to public feedback to shape the Police and Crime Plan. This helps build strong links between safety, fairness, and community spirit in West Yorkshire.
