Patrice tells us of her new-found love for cycling
We talked to Patrice from Linthwaite in Kirklees, who has recently learned to ride a bike with the help of one of the many groups teaching cycling across Yorkshire. Now, she loves nothing more than jumping on her bike - whether it’s popping down to the shops, a trip with her new cycling group, or a day out with the family enjoying the beautiful scenery along the local canal.
How did you get into cycling?
I only learned how to cycle a couple of months ago. It had always been a dream of mine, and I never knew it was possible until recently. It's the best decision I've ever made.
All my life, I've wanted to cycle. But I had never been taught as a child. When I became an adult, I thought it was just something that was never achievable.
I started looking locally and soon discovered Colne Valley Cycle Therapy. They specialise in teaching people how to ride, especially adult first-time riders. I went there, and they were very patient and supportive. I got one-to-one lessons, and they were keen on assisting me to be the best I can. And here I am – a proper cyclist.
Was it hard learning to cycle?
I'm really appreciative of Colne Valley Cycle Therapy helping people like me learn to cycle. They took their time with me. They told me that there were no stupid questions and no mistakes, they were there to teach and guide me. They did all they could to help me to get on this path, so kudos to Cycle Therapy for that.
Cycling has 100% had a positive impact on my life. I had never realized before how beneficial it can be for you. It’s made me feel so much fitter and healthier.
Do you cycle alone or with friends?
I got my girlfriends involved and was surprised to find out that some of them had never ridden before. I was shocked to realize that I'm not the only one. I also got my husband involved, even though he's an expert rider, and my son and step kids, so we're all a part of this together.
I’m also now part of a cycle group. We meet every Thursday and Sunday. I religiously go out cycling, and I take my family with me, I even take one of my friends. This is something I do come rain or shine. I've made some wonderful friends, really lovely people. And it's a good way to socialise.
What impact has cycling had on your life?
Cycling has 100% had a positive impact on my life. I had never realized before how beneficial it can be for you. It’s made me feel so much fitter and healthier.
Cycling was always a dream of mine, but now that I've gotten into it, I realise the numerous benefits. It's a wonderful de-stressor for me. I have a very stressful job, and at the end of the day, when I ride with my new cycling group, I just feel the stress, tension and burden of the day dissipates with every pedal stroke.
Cycling is also wonderful family bonding time. I have a teenage son, and sometimes he doesn't want to be seen in public with me. But he enjoys cycling and it's something that we do together. I also go cycling with my husband. It's something I look forward to, it's just great.
How has cycling changed your lifestyle?
Before, if I needed to go to the shop to buy a bottle of milk or something, I would have gone in my car, and it’s just a two-minute drive. Now, I jump on my bike.
There are only benefits to be had from cycling, I can't think of anything negative. There are only positives to be gained, and I want to say to anybody out there, you can join in! Go for it!
