Requesting a Right of Review

If you’re unhappy with how your complaint was resolved, you may be able to request a formal review to ensure it was handled reasonably and proportionately, and to see if further action should be taken.

If you believe the outcome of your complaint to West Yorkshire Police was not reasonable and proportionate, you may have the right to apply for a review.

The relevant review body will be named in the outcome letter from West Yorkshire Police, and will either be the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) or the Mayor’s office. For complaints where criminality or serious misconduct have been alleged, the review will be done by the IOPC. For other complaints, the review will be done by the Mayor, delegated to the Policing and Crime team on her behalf.

The purpose of a review will be to assess whether the police force resolved the complaint in a reasonable and proportionate way to identify any potential learning or opportunities for improvement. Please note, the purpose of the review is not to re-investigate your complaint or the matter that it relates to.

The outcome of a review could be:

  • Confirmation that the complaint was resolved in a reasonable and proportionate way or
  • A recommendation to the police force for more work to be done to resolve the complaint. The recommendation may include what more work is thought to be needed.

The review body will write to the complainant with the outcome of the review.
