Culture and the arts in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire is a stunning region of the country, bursting with rich culture, history and diversity.

That’s why as part of the West Yorkshire Plan, we’ve made it one of our missions to make progress in key areas, including sport, heritage and culture access by 2040. Read on to discover more.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority champions culture and the arts across Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. We invest in cultural organisations, support major events, and work to make arts and heritage accessible to everyone in the region.

West Yorkshire has one of England's most vibrant cultural scenes, from Bradford's status as a UNESCO City of Film to the music, theatre and heritage venues that define our five districts. We invest in culture as a driver of economic growth, community wellbeing and regional pride - working with partners to make the arts accessible to all.

Our region has produced some of the world's most celebrated artists, including sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, whose work continues to draw visitors and inspire new generations. West Yorkshire's towns and cities offer a rich mix of food, drink, shopping and cultural venues - from the independent galleries and markets of the Calder Valley to the retail and cultural destinations of Leeds city centre.

That is why we are committed to doing even more to promote and develop our region's culture for current and future generations to enjoy. Through the West Yorkshire Plan, Mission Two sets out our vision for a happy West Yorkshire - connecting great places and healthy communities for everyone to enjoy. Connected people in thriving spaces

We know West Yorkshire is a great place to live. We want happy communities to be better connected. That's why we’re committed to active neighbourhoods with rich culture and safe green spaces.

Providing truly affordable, high-quality housing

Access to cultural delights is important, but West Yorkshire must also be affordable for many. With this goal, the Combined Authority is dedicated to providing truly affordable, high-quality housing. This will meet the needs of our people and communities.

Healthier people, healthier region

We’re focused on increasing the health and wellbeing of the people of West Yorkshire. We want the life expectancy of our region to equal the national average. Areas to help this include increasing participation in sport, improved wellbeing levels and increased activity levels. From creating safer green spaces to increased funding in grassroots sport, we’re doing our bit to achieve our goals.
