Bradford A6177 outer ring road

Upgrades to Bradford’s A6177 to improve journeys and air quality.

Completed

What is the Bradford A6177 project?

This scheme focused on traffic improvements at two key junctions in Bradford:

  • A6177 Whetley Lane/Toller Lane
  • A6177 Thornton Road/Cemetery Road

The project included adding two-lane approaches where possible, creating dedicated turning lanes and making it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

As a result, these improvements have:

  • Improved journey time reliability along the Western part of the A6177 outer ring road (ORR)
  • Reduced congestion along the route
  • Created a more attractive and accessible environment for the local community
  • Improved air quality
  • Helped people access jobs and housing more easily

Bradford Council led the project with West Yorkshire Combined Authority as a delivery partner.

The scheme is part of the corridor improvement programme, which works to reduce journey times, improve local connections and make travel safer and more reliable for everyone.

Work on the project took place between April 2020 and May 2024.

How was this project funded?

This scheme was funded with £10.2 million from the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund.
