What is the Bradford Forster Square Station gateway project?

Bradford Forster Square is the fifth most used railway station in West Yorkshire, with approximately two million entries and exits each year. As one of six locations identified in the station gateways programme, the station underwent a major redevelopment to create a modern, accessible and welcoming transport hub.

The new facility includes:

  • A dedicated café
  • A staffed ticket office and information centre
  • Ticket vending machines
  • Seating areas on the main concourse
  • Improved cycle parking
  • New lifts to School Street to replace the existing lift, ensuring accessible access from the first to the last trains

These upgrades aim to enhance the station's functionality and visual appeal, making it a more attractive point of arrival for residents, commuters and visitors to Bradford.

The objectives of this project were:

  • Deliver a high-quality, modern railway station for Bradford.
  • Improve the passenger experience with new facilities.
  • Enhance station accessibility through modern lift installations.
  • Strengthen the city’s image with a welcoming gateway for visitors.
  • Support increased rail usage through better infrastructure.

This project was led by Bradford Council. Work began in November 2023 and was completed in November 2024.

How was this project funded?

£17.061 million from the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund, £17.311 million from the total scheme cost and £250,000 from Bradford Council.
