Brighouse flood alleviation scheme

The Brighouse flood alleviation scheme is strengthening flood defences and improving the surrounding environment to protect homes, business and nature.

Delivery

What is the Brighouse flood alleviation scheme?

The Brighouse flood alleviation scheme is working to reduce the risk of flooding to homes, businesses and transport routes in Brighouse and nearby areas.

The scheme is helping to protect 55 residential and 359 non-residential properties from flooding by repairing and replacing flood defences along the River Calder.

This includes:

  • Repairing and replacing flood defences along the River Calder
  • Planting 250 trees
  • Creating 2 hectares of new woodland
  • Creating and restoring 1.56 hectares of wetland
  • Enhancing 1.56 hectares of woodland through management

As a result of these improvements, this will:

  • Lower the flood risk to 55 homes
  • Lower the flood risk to 359 commercial or other properties
  • Absorb approximately 2 tonnes of Carbon dioxide each year through new plants and trees
  • Improve 1.61 hectares of land to a better conservation status

The project also aims to reduce the risk of flooding from Clifton Beck by making landscape improvements at Wellhome Park and Whinney Hill Park. This includes creating new woodland, wetlands and improving 55 hectares of wildlife habitat.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is working with the Environment Agency and their partners to deliver this project.

Work on this project started in October 2017 and is expected to finish in March 2028.

How is this project funded?

As part of the West Yorkshire devolution deal, we secured funding for this scheme through the Single Investment fund. The scheme is delivered through the Single Investment Fund (SIF), Investment Priority 3 gainshare allocation.

What is the flood risk management programme?

This programme is a series of measures to help prevent flooding. They aim to:

  • Reduce the need for repairs to houses and businesses from flood damage
  • Improve flood protection for vulnerable and deprived areas
  • Use innovative and sustainable flood prevention methods, which will help decrease our carbon footprint and support our goal to become carbon net zero by 2038
  • Improve biodiversity in our rivers and surrounding areas, supporting our Local Nature Recovery Strategy

The £7 million-pound Natural Flood Management (NFM) programme uses methods that work with the environment and replicate natural processes.

As well as the NFM programme, there is £10million available to focus on flood prevention infrastructure. This will support a wide range of engineering schemes delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency and local authorities. This will protect 2,560 homes and 2,271 businesses, as well as safeguarding around 29,000 full time jobs.
