Improvements along Aire Street and Wheldon Road to reduce congestion, enable future housing and employment growth, and improve routes for walking, cycling and public transport.

Development

What is the Castleford growth corridor scheme?

The Castleford growth corridor scheme is part of our corridor improvement programme and focuses on upgrading local infrastructure around Aire Street and Wheldon Road. The area, identified as a ‘Housing Zone’, is key to supporting Castleford’s planned growth in housing and jobs.

The scheme delivered a new link road, improved pedestrian crossings, a dedicated cycle lane, flood mitigation measures and public realm upgrades along the waterfront. These enhancements will support cleaner travel, ease congestion and unlock future development.

This project was led by Wakefield Council  in delivery with West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Work began in April 2024 and was completed in January 2025 .

How is this project funded?

A total of £9.27 million from the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.
