What is the Kirklees A62 smart corridor project?

The Kirklees A62 Smart Corridor project focused on increasing capacity along the A62 to support expected growth in housing and jobs in the area, while also encouraging a shift toward more sustainable travel.

Key aims of the project included:

  • Easing congestion, which contributes to poor air quality and slow peak-time journeys
  • Improving the safety of the A62 road corridor
  • Improving access to employment sites, including the Cooper Bridge Enterprise Zone
  • Strengthening links to the strategic and primary route network
  • Building in a more sustainable transport network and shift from private car use
  • Enhancing the accessibility of potential housing growth allocations in the Local Plan

The improvements are designed to help build a more efficient and environmentally-friendly transport network, supporting long-term economic and community growth.

Kirklees Council led the project with West Yorkshire Combined Authority as a delivery partner. Work on the project took place between December 2021 and June 2023.

How was this project funded?

The project was funded with £8.35 million from the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund.

What is the corridor improvements programme?

This scheme is part of the corridor improvement programme. Corridor improvement projects are supported by the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.

The programme aims to deliver benefits for all road users and:

  • Improve journey times and road reliability
  • Support economic growth by improving access to jobs, homes, and development sites
