Leeds Dyneley Arms

Improving traffic flow and safety at a key junction between Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate.

Completed

What is the Dyneley Arms project?

This project upgraded the busy Dyneley Arms junction to improve traffic flow, reduce air pollution and encourage walking, cycling and public transport.

The scheme is part of the corridor improvement programme, which works to reduce journey times, improve local connections and make travel safer and more reliable for everyone.

Dyneley Arms is a key junction on the A660 and A658, connecting Leeds (12km South East), Bradford (13km South West) and Harrogate (12km North East).

Due to its remote location, the junction previously lacked any dedicated pedestrian or cycle facilities.

This project delivered a ‘quick-win’ improvement scheme, focussing on:

  • Upgrading traffic signal technology and vehicle detection systems
  • Widening the centre of the junction to stop right-turning vehicles from blocking traffic going straight ahead

These improvements are expected to:

  • Improve traffic flow and reduce delays
  • Improve air quality
  • Increase the reliability of bus times

Promote bus, walking, and cycling as alternative modes of transport with features like advanced stop lines for cyclists and a potential new pedestrian crossing

Leeds City Council led the project with West Yorkshire Combined Authority as a delivery partner. Work on the project took place between 2021 and August 2023.

How was this project funded?

The project was funded with £2.336 million from the West Yorkshire + Transport Fund.

What is the corridor improvement programme?

This scheme is part of the corridor improvement programme. Corridor improvement projects are supported by the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.

The programme aims to deliver benefits for all road users and:

  • Improve journey times and road reliability
  • Support economic growth by improving access to jobs, homes, and development sites
  • Reduce emissions and support efforts to tackle the climate emergency
