Through the Solar Together scheme, West Yorkshire residents were able to join forces and access more affordable solar panels for their homes, helping to cut energy bills and carbon emissions at the same time.
The West Yorkshire Combined Authority supported a collective buying scheme to make residential solar PV more accessible and affordable for homeowners across the region.
Instead of each person buying solar panels on their own, a group of residents will buy them together. This makes the overall cost cheaper, around 30% less than usual market prices as it's done in bulk.
The scheme is not free or fully funded, but it makes solar energy much more affordable for people who can pay.
The goal was to install solar panels on about 811 privately owned homes, which would generate around 3.2 megawatts of clean energy.
This could save an estimated 762,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions every year, helping the environment.
It could also lead to £506,400 in total savings on energy bills each year across all participating homes.
The scheme opened in 2024 and was completed in March 2025. This was led by Home Energy West Yorkshire, in partnership with Solar Together (ichoosr).
The project received £58,000 funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and £5 million from private sector investment.
