Expanding a popular Leeds park and ride to support greener, faster travel into the city centre.
This is one of several bus and rail station improvement schemes under the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund. Work on the Temple Green Park and Ride supports sustainable travel by reducing congestion and providing reliable, high-quality bus services. A later extension has increased capacity and improved service frequency to meet growing demand.
Temple Green Park and Ride, located in the Aire Valley regeneration area in Leeds, provides cleaner and more convenient travel into the city centre. The Aire Valley is a major regeneration area covering 1,300 hectares to the south-east of the city centre, including both banks of the River Aire running from the city centre to the M1 motorway.
The Temple Green Park and Ride first opened in June 2017 with 1,000 spaces. It is a secure and fully staffed facility including:
The site has been highly successful, with strong and growing passenger demand. As a result, an extension scheme was developed to expand capacity and improve service.
Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority led this project.
Work on the original Park and Ride construction took place between 2014 and 2016. Work on the project extension took place between June 2020 and January 2023.
The Temple Green Park and Ride extension scheme added up to 389 new spaces. This helps meet rising demand and encourages more people to travel into Leeds by bus.
The scheme also included increasing the bus service frequency, reducing wait times from 10 minutes to 8.5 minutes during peak hours.
The Park and Ride extension scheme was originally developed under the Leeds Public Transport Investment Programme (LPTIP). Full funding for the scheme has now been sourced from the Getting Building Fund.
