Wakefield A650 Newton Bar

Upgrading the junction and roundabout at Newton Bar to improve traffic flow in Wakefield.

Completed

What is the Wakefield A650 Newton Bar project?

The A650 Newton Bar project upgraded a major roundabout to improve traffic flow, support future housing development and make walking and cycling safer and easier.

This scheme is part of the Corridor Improvement Programme, which works to reduce journey times, improve local connections and make travel safer and more reliable for everyone.

The A650 is a busy route in Wakefield that often experiences heavy congestion, especially at the Newton Bar roundabout. This roundabout connects several key roads:

  • The A650 dual carriageway leading to M1 Junction 41
  • The A61 Leeds Road, which includes the 110 bus routes into the city centre
  • Bar Lane, providing access to Pinderfields Hospital and the City Fields housing development

This project aimed to improve the roundabout’s capacity, to improve traffic flow and support the development of future housing. Key improvements include:

  • Enlarging the roundabout
  • Installing traffic signals to improve traffic flow
  • Upgrading pedestrian and cycle facilities across the roundabout to improve access and safety

Wakefield Council led this project with West Yorkshire Combined Authority as a delivery partner. Work on this project took place between December 2021 and January 2023.

How was this project funded?

This project was funded with £9.135 million from the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund – Corridor Improvement Programme.
