Keeping people safe

Your safety is our top priority. At West Yorkshire Combined Authority, we’re striving for a future where everyone in our region feels safe.

Read on to discover our main focus areas, like the Safety of Women and Girls and the important Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP)

We asked, you answered. A survey in 2024 with West Yorkshire residents showed that 95.7% of respondents said ‘keeping people safe’ is 'important'. Concerns focused on knife crime, child sexual abuse/exploitation, and domestic abuse.

I work with young people in deprived areas – gangs travel to recruit them I am glad there is a spotlight on serious violence.

We are prioritising your top concerns. We’re working with our five local authorities (Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Calderdale, and Kirklees) as part of our Serious Violence Strategy. This strategy focuses on knife crime and addresses the recent rise in knife-enabled robberies.

We're also addressing domestic abuse as part of our Safety of Young Women and Girls Strategy.

We’re also working to implement the Police Race and Action Plan both locally and nationally. This is designed to create a police service which is anti-racist and trusted by black people. It sets out changes within policing that will improve outcomes for black people who work with or interact with the police.

Together, our efforts will ensure your community is safe, inclusive and accessible for everyone.
