Eligibility:

  • You must be aged 19+ and reside in West Yorkshire.
  • You must be able to evidence Right to work in the UK 
  • Level 2+ English (verbal and written) 
  • Interest in teaching ESOL 
  • Digital access and basic tech literacy

Dates: From January 2026

Duration: 12 weeks

Venue: For face-to-face delivery the courses will be delivered from Enfield Centre, Roundhay Road, Leeds, LS7 1RG  

Online delivery will be delivered remotely. 

Overview of training

The Skills Bootcamp in ESOL Tutor Training is a 12-week course designed to give you the teaching skills needed to start your journey in ESOL education. With 5 hours per week of in-person classroom learning and 5 hours of independent study, you’ll gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge to prepare for real-world teaching environments. 

  Key components include: 

  • Interactive sessions on lesson planning, teaching strategies, and assessment methods. 

  • Observed teaching practice with feedback from experienced tutors. 

  • Access to online learning modules for additional support and self-paced study. 

This course is ideal for those looking to take the first step towards becoming an ESOL tutor or those seeking to upskill and progress in their teaching career. Through a blend of interactive lectures, practical teaching practice, and online learning, you will gain a strong understanding of teaching methods, lesson planning, and learner assessment. Suitable for those looking to start or progress in a career in ESOL teaching, this course also provides participants with the opportunity to apply for further qualifications such as the Level 5 ESOL Apprenticeship. 

Key topics include: 

  • Understanding the needs of ESOL learners 

  • Lesson planning and delivery 

  • Practical teaching practice with real learners 

  • Assessment methods and evaluation 

Upon completion, participants will be awarded the Ascentis Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching. 

Prerequisites 

Technical requirements: 

  • Device Access: You must have access to a computer or laptop with audio and video capabilities to participate in online learning components and virtual classroom sessions. 
  • Internet Connectivity: Reliable internet access is required to access the Learning Management System (LMS), online resources, live tutorials, and virtual classrooms. 
  • Specific software or platform access required for the course will be provided by Leeds City College.  

  Educational prerequisites:  

  • Language Proficiency: As the course content and instruction will be in English, a proficient level of English is required. Non-native speakers should have a minimum of ESOL Level 2 or equivalent.  
  • Educational Background: While specific qualifications in teaching or English are not mandatory, an interest in teaching and/or language education is highly recommended.  

Participation and commitment:  

  • Attendance: You must commit to attending all scheduled classroom sessions and online tutorials. Absences must be communicated in advance and made up per course policies. 
  • Coursework and Assignments: Completion of all assigned coursework, including online modules, assignments, and practical teaching exercises, is required. 
  • Teaching Practice: Active participation in practical teaching practice sessions, including planning, delivering, and reflecting on teaching practice, is mandatory. 
  • Self-Directed Study: Participants should allocate additional time outside of guided learning hours for self-directed study, course reading, and portfolio development. 

Additional requirements:  

  • Background Check: For teaching practice placements within schools or adult learning centres, a background check may be required. For this programme, the teaching practice placements will take place in our ESOL classrooms, CRB checks will not be required for these. 
  • Professional Conduct: You are expected to adhere to professional standards and codes of conduct, particularly during teaching practice sessions. 
  • Technical Skills: Basic digital literacy skills, such as the ability to use email, navigate online platforms, and create digital documents, are essential for engaging with the course content and delivery methods.

What next?
