Eligibility:

  • You must be aged 19+ and reside in West Yorkshire
  • Hold English and maths qualifications at Level 2 (e.g. GCSE) and be working at or above this level  
  • Have basic working IT knowledge 
  • Learners must be able to understand and communicate the concepts in the course content and take assessments comprising exams and a short report.  
  • Commitment of 40 private study hours outside of the classroom

Course overview

The NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the most widely accepted NEBOSH qualifications by employers and professional memberships. The Certificate is widely recognised to improve health and safety skills and environmental management. It supports managers, supervisors and staff to make improvements and gain sustainable health and safety knowledge.  

The course provides a valuable overview of the core aspects of occupational health and safety, equipping you with the skills to manage and assess workplace risk effectively.

  • Ideal for anyone looking to embark on a health and safety career 

There are 11 course elements, classroom based taught for 6hrs per session, each covering the following topics: 

Unit NG1: Management of Health and Safety 

  • Element 1 - Why we should manage workplace health and safety
  • Element 2 - How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  • Element 3 - Managing risk – understanding people and processes
  • Element 4 - Health and safety monitoring and measuring 

Unit NG2: Risk Assessment 

  • Element 5 - Physical and psychological health
  • Element 6 - Musculoskeletal health
  • Element 7 - Chemical and biological agents
  • Element 8 - General workplace issues
  • Element 9 - Work equipment
  • Element 10 - Fire
  • Element 11 - Electricity 

 By the end of the course, you will have developed the skills that include but are not limited to: 

  • Justify health and safety improvements using moral, legal and financial arguments 

  • Act as an in-house auditor and consultant to advise on the main duties for health and safety in the workplace. 

  • Help to manage the well-being of staff, visitors, contractors, etc on site. 

  • Help their organization manage contractors 

  • Work within a health and safety management system, recognising what effective general policy, organisation and arrangements should look like. 

  • Develop safe systems of work including taking accounts of typical emergencies and knowing when to use permit-to- work systems for special risks 

  • Take part in accident investigations 

  • Positively influence the health and safety culture and behaviour to improve performance in their organisation.  

  • Recognise workplace changes that have significant health and safety impacts and effective ways to minimise those impacts.  

  • Help their employer to check their management system effectiveness – through monitoring, audits and reviews.

This Skills Bootcamp provides a platform from which you can enter roles such as: 

  • Health & Safety Manager 
  • Compliance Officer
  • Risk Assessor/Risk Consultant
  • Facilities Manager
  • Specialist Roles within Government, Education or Corporate Sectors 

Once completed, our students often continue their studies by completing a NEBOSH Fire Safety, NEBOSH Construction, NEBOSH Environmental or upskill to a Level 6 NEBOSH Diploma (an honour’s degree level qualification that advances prospects in the health and safety field). 

Additionally, gain professional recognition. NEBOSH Qualifications are recognised nationally and globally by institutions such as IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health), IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment), IIRSM (International Institute of Risk and Safety Management).
