'Knives Claim Lives' helps turn the tide on serious violence

Called ‘Knives Claim Lives’ it has been jointly supported by the West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Partnership and Safer Kirklees.

It follows the experiences of a teenager swept into gang culture and the fatal results.

Developed by the local award-winning Sam Teale Productions, the premiere took place at the Xclusive venue in Batley.

The event saw speakers impacted by knife crime, those leading prevention projects, as well as a ‘making of’ documentary.

Indie-rock band, The Slates also gave a live performance of their original song, which is featured in the film.

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin was at the launch and said:

“We have an amazing creative sector in West Yorkshire, which can play an important role in addressing the big issues that impact our communities.

“This short film is a great example of how our local talent can help influence children and young people on themes such as knife crime and prevent them from becoming involved.

“Addressing serious violence sits at the heart of our plans for a safer, fairer West Yorkshire and we want people to have their say on that as part of the ongoing consultation.”

The film is being shared across social media, aiming to change attitudes and behaviours around knife crime.

Sam Teale, Managing Director at Sam Teale Productions said:

“Our young team has experienced the impact of knife crime first-hand, either through personal experiences or those of friends.

“We are dedicated to using our talents to make the world a better place, and we are honoured to have received funding to bring this vision to life and hopefully make a difference.”

As part of the current Police and Crime Plan consultation we want to ask you about what serious violence looks like in your area so that we can ensure that your voice is heard.

Once completed the plan will set out our policing priorities and the direction of West Yorkshire Police over the next four years. The Public Survey runs between 16 July 2024 and 31 October 2024
