What is the Pontefract fire station redevelopment project?

The former Pontefract fire station redevelopment is under the Brownfield Housing Fund programme which supports the delivery of 5,400 new homes on brownfield sites. It aims to regenerate neighbourhoods, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a mix of affordable housing close to transport hubs.

What was achieved?

The former fire station site at the corner of Stuart Street and Newport Street in Pontefract town centre has now been fully redeveloped.

The project transformed an unused brownfield site into a new 3-storey building offering 37 affordable apartments. It also includes 26 car parking spaces and attractive landscaping around the site.

To support sustainable travel, the development includes electric vehicle charging points and bike storage. It’s in a great location, just a short walk from Pontefract bus station, making it easy for residents to travel without a car.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Regeneration team led the project with Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) as delivery partners.

Work began in November 2021 and was completed in March 2023.

How was this project funded?

The project received £419,124 in funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
