The superfast West Yorkshire and York broadband programme was delivered over the course of three contracts to increase access across the region to reliable broadband.
Under Contracts 1 and 2, the project involved replacing the old copper phone lines with modern fibre-optic cables. This upgrade has allowed for much faster and more reliable internet. It also made it possible to bring better connectivity to remote areas that more traditional networks have struggled to reach until now. One of these new solutions is a fixed wireless solution, which was introduced under Contract 3.
The programme covered the following administrative districts; Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and City of York. Working in partnership with the local bodies, suppliers and Building Digital UK, the Combined Authority coordinated across all six regions to ensure an integrated and unified approach.
The programme ended in June 2023.

‘Superfast broadband’ means internet download speeds of more than 30 megabits per second (Mbps). In some cases, speeds can go up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) depending on the connection type and technology used. However, these higher speeds aren’t possible without improving the network.
It is the government’s current target to achieve 85% Gigabit Broadband coverage by 2025. However, a number of locations were considered unviable for many of the major commercial roll-outs, so this programme was initiated in 2013 to cover areas that may have otherwise missed out on the new advances.
