Wakefield warm homes fund

Wakefield warm homes fund helps local households stay warm and save on energy bills by installing insulation and modern heating systems. The scheme supported upgrades to inefficient or missing heating, reduced carbon emissions and created healthier, more energy-efficient homes.

What is the Wakefield warm homes fund?

This scheme supports Wakefield Council’s ongoing Home Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme, which already helps households through the fuel poverty fund. As part of the Getting Building Fund, this scheme offered extra upgrades to help homes save energy and stay warm.

It included:

  • Installing insulation and new boilers in homes.
  • Helping households switch from old, carbon-heavy heating to efficient gas central heating, especially where no central heating currently exists.
  • Upgrading existing heating systems to more modern and efficient ones.
  • Adding insulation to homes that are suitable for it.

The aim is to reduce energy bills and make homes warmer, safer, and healthier. These upgrades will also lower carbon emissions, helping West Yorkshire reach its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2038.

What was achieved?

This scheme delivered:

  • Completed up to 271 energy efficiency improvements to households across the Wakefield district
  • Reduced CO2 emissions by 2,000 tonnes

This project was completed in January 2023.

What is the Getting Building Fund?

The Getting Building Fund is a government-backed investment programme designed to accelerate "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects that create jobs and boost economic recovery. In September 2020, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority received £52.6 million to deliver 15 projects across the region.

These projects aim to:

  • Boost local economic growth
  • Help communities recover from the pandemic
  • Support a green and inclusive recovery
  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Improve connectivity and access

By the end of the programme, the following results are expected:

  • Create more than 1,800 new jobs
  • Create more than 400 construction jobs
  • Safeguard a further 500 jobs
  • Unlock 4.83 km of roads/cycle lanes/walkways
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 79,000 tonnes
  • Assist more than 200 businesses and create 17,000 m² of commercial space for business, retail, and leisure facilities
  • Create 140 m² of learning space and support 200 new learners
  • Create 6,800 m² green spaces in city centres
  • Provide at least 40 new super-fast broadband connections
  • Improve energy efficiency for over 400 households
