Green careers

A West Yorkshire Green Jobs Taskforce has been set up by Tracy Brabin to deliver the key pledge of creating 1,000 green jobs for young people. Find out more about the green economy and our regional journey to net zero.

Welcome to our green jobs and careers page: West Yorkshire’s resource for everything related to the green economy and our regional journey to net zero. With this page, we plan to continue the Mayor's pledge to provide well-paid, skilled, green jobs for young people and celebrate the achievement that employers in West Yorkshire have committed to creating 1,000 new green jobs.

If you’re an employer you will be able to gain a deeper understanding of what green jobs have been created in the region, examples of best practice, and find out what support is available and get involved in the Mayor’s pledge and see other employers who have pledged.

If you’re an individual, you can find more about green skills needed for a variety of job roles, get inspired, find support, and potential pathways to upskill or retrain to support you on your pathway into a green job. You will also find links to free training opportunities and local services who can offer careers support.

Every job has the potential to be a green job, so it’s important we all start to understand more about the green economy and how roles and our skills might be changing as we move to become a net zero carbon economy by 2038.

What are green jobs?

A green job can be anything that supports the UK’s journey towards meeting environmental goals, such as lowering carbon emissions or restoring nature. The good thing about green jobs is that, because there are so many types in so many sectors, there are different pathways you could follow to get into a job that can support the region to be more sustainable.

As a region, we have committed to becoming a net zero carbon economy by 2038 and making significant progress on this by the end of the decade.

What is the Green Jobs Taskforce?

The Green Jobs Taskforce brings together experts from business, education, and training, and the third and public sectors. Its goal is to position West Yorkshire as a leader and set out a roadmap to deliver the skills and jobs needed to address the climate emergency.

The Taskforce will oversee the Mayor's pledge for well-paid, skilled, green jobs for young people. It will ensure that West Yorkshire has the pipeline of talent needed to realise its ambitious target of becoming a net zero carbon economy by 2038, with significant progress by the end of the decade.

Every individual and business in West Yorkshire has the opportunity to contribute to this commitment.
