  • You must live in West Yorkshire and be aged 19 or older

  • A clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as volunteering in the college is a part of the course

Course overview

This is a taught course which requires attendance at Shipley College every Friday for 11 weeks and includes a voluntary work placement at the College. 

Help young people and adults gain greater independence, develop vital skills, and make their own informed decisions, all while progressing powerfully with their lives. This isn't just a job; it's a chance to truly change lives for the better, every single day. 

On this course, you'll learn about effective strategies for supporting individuals with SEND to achieve their learning goals. You'll also gain crucial knowledge in safeguarding vulnerable adults, ensuring you're equipped with the skills to protect and champion those in your care. 

You'll spend valuable time shadowing experienced practitioners, putting your classroom knowledge into real-world action and building confidence in a supportive environment. Plus, you'll earn recognised qualifications that prove your skills, knowledge, and professional behaviours to future employers. 

This course is suitable for people who want to move into a career as a Teaching Assistant, supporting young people and adults who have SEND, but don’t yet have the skills, knowledge and experience to secure a job.

What will you get?

You will study for the following two qualifications: 

Level 2 Certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) 

Modules include: 

  • Understanding SEND
  • Diagnosis for individuals with SEND 
  • Supporting Individuals with SEND 
  • Promote Independence and Well-being for Individuals with SEND and Disabilities  

L2 Award in Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults 

Modules include: 

  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults
  • Safeguarding Legislation for Vulnerable Adults

You can progress into work and continue your learning onto the Free Courses for Jobs (FCFJ) funded L3 Certificate in the Principles of SEND.
