Memorials

To all of those who have lost their lives or suffered injury on our roads. I want to ensure that I represent all victims but in particular NCG and AG.

A family friends son died whilst speeding - I pledge in his memory.

In memory of my mother, who was killed by a driver who’d been texting.

I pledge this on behalf of DB, my Dad, but also a husband, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him. D was killed instantly by joyriders back in 1992 when they slammed into the side of the car he and I were in.

To a 5 year old girl who died as a result of speed. The speed was 36 in a 30!

In memory of all police officers killed or injured in the line of duty, whilst maintaining safer roads and safeguarding members of the public.

In memory of all individuals who have sadly lost their lives on the road

I pledge this to the memory of my dear sister who paid for me 6 driving lessons for my 18th birthday starting me on my journey to safe driving & re-education others especially fleet drivers.

To all the folks I know living with serious life long injuries after being hit by drivers walking or on their bike, to the folks from my home City, and the cities I visit around the world remembered in ghost bikes, and other roadside memorials as the victims of road death. To anyone who has ever as a cyclist or pedestrian who has experienced intimidation by someone using their vehicle as a weapon to threaten bodily harm.

My friend who died aged 17 after a collision with a car.

To all those who were lost on the roads.

My uncle who was knocked off his grandsons cycle near Bristol. He had only been retired 4 months when it happened in July 1991. He was in a coma for 3 months before he passed over in Oct 1991.

The 2 children who died in Wakefield 3 weeks ago.

Dedicated to KP who was killed in an RTC as a young driver when we were in 6th form.

In memory of my mum, who was killed by a car 30 years ago and who never got to see her children or grandchildren grow. And every life lost or changed on a UK road ❤️

For everyone affected by these incidents, in particular NCG, AG and the girl who lost her life on Queens Drive, Ossett back when I was at school. I don't recall their name now unfortunately but the impact was felt at the time and something that stuck with me.

I dedicate my pledge to my sister in law who was tragically killed in 1995 whilst riding her bicycle and teaching her children the safe way to ride. She was hit by a car from behind on a major A road. The driver ran from the scene but was caught, he claimed that his passenger was actually the driver.

To all the pedestrians and people on bikes killed or maimed by other road users.

All those deaths I had dealings with as a police officer.

To all those that have died on our roads.

To all those in Kirklees who have been a victim of a road traffic accident and those who are bereaved.

To my father who would always say "Green does not mean GO - it means ' go with care if it is safe to do so".

In memory of my mum who gave me the strength to have such diligence.

To all those children who lost their parents and now have to live without a parents' love.

All young and old that have been taken too soon as a result of road traffic incidents.

I would like to dedicate my pledge to my nephew, who was sadly killed in a traffic collision.

Dedicated to all young lives lost or changed forever on our roads.

My bestie's two aunts who were killed in a taxi.

I would like to dedicate my pledge to my cousin, who was only 16 years old when he died in a car crash.

I dedicate my pledge to all the innocent people that have had their lives taken far too soon, and to the families that are left with the grief of losing their loved ones.

After 47 years service, I have witnessed far more deaths than I should have and lost a number of colleagues due to road traffic accidents.

In memory of my young brother who died at 24 at the wheel of a car (abroad).

I pledge in memory of my Dad who was killed by young so-called 'joyriders' many years back.

My late brother who died in a road accident aged 9.

To anyone who has sadly lost a life on our highways.

My 12 year old daughter who was killed by a young newly qualified driver who lost control of their car at speed on a bend crashing head onto our car.

Thoughts of the child who lost control of an e scooter that ran out into the path of a vehicle. She bounced over the bonnet of the car, however survived the ordeal. A lucky escape.

Remembering victims of crashes

In 1999, an oak tree was planted in Park Square Gardens, Leeds LS1 2NP along with a memorial plaque. This commemorates all those in Leeds who have lost their lives or been seriously affected by road crashes.

The tree is not for laying flowers or other tributes. Instead, it serves as a quiet space for those grieving or healing, and for the people of Leeds to reflect.

In 2024, the memorial plaque was updated to mark the 25th anniversary of the tree's planting.

Caring for the memorial tree is part of the Leeds Vision Zero 2040 Strategy, which shows our ongoing commitment to supporting those affected by road crashes.
