Mayor of West Yorkshire addresses press conference about disorder in Harehills

19 July 2024

Addressing a press conference in Leeds earlier this afternoon, Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, responded to the disorder in Harehills last night.

“I have been in Harehills this afternoon with my Deputy Mayor meeting community representatives and offering any support we can give. It has been distressing for the community to witness violence, carried out by a criminal minority, so I am doing all I can to support those affected.

“Last night was distressing for the community and I commend those who went above and beyond to try and de-escalate the situation.

“I strongly urge calm and for parents to urge their youngsters to stay at home.

“My message to everyone would be to refrain from speculating on social media. This is not the time for dog whistle politics from those who do not understand our community and have never been here.

“One of my top priorities is making West Yorkshire a safer and fairer place - I am appalled by the criminal behaviour of a small minority and welcome the fact that police have already made several arrests.”
