“Firstly, my heart goes out to the loved ones of Star Hobson and Arthur Labinjo-Hughes. The cruelty shown to both children is incomprehensible.
“I truly hope that the outcome of this joint report offers some degree of solace and ensures that others never have to endure such awful and tragic circumstances.
“It reinforces the fundamental need for change nationally, with the right resources and funding in place to enhance all of our safeguarding practices.
“The findings of the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care published earlier this week are indicative of this, highlighting what more can be done.
“Locally, I continue to work closely with West Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable to make certain any recommendations for the Force are quickly implemented, and lessons learned. I know many have already.
“I also remain engaged with our partners in Bradford, ensuring we are jointly delivering for those who are most vulnerable in our communities, to ensure no other child suffers as these children have done.”
“As a parent and mother, the murders of these two children, is almost impossible to fathom.
“Safeguarding is, however, all of our responsibility, and we must continue to work together to address any inadequacies and protect ‘at-risk’ children across our county.
“These horrendous cases have shone a spotlight, and we must ensure that the recommendations of this report are engrained in our future partnership approach.
“The Police have a crucial role to play, and these latest findings will help inform the priorities contained in the Mayor’s Police and Crime Plan for West Yorkshire.
“I will personally be doing everything in my power to ensure that the Force is responding to the expectations and operating to the highest standards.”
