Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime responds to ONS crime stats ending September 2022

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today (26/01) published the latest figures for Crime in England and Wales (year ending September 2022).

Overall crime in West Yorkshire has risen by 16.6% over this period when compared against the previous twelve months.

This means the data being compared is from a time of Covid restrictions verses a time with no restrictions, with increases being expected across England and Wales as a result.

West Yorkshire Police are also independently graded as “Outstanding” for their crime recording processes, unlike many other areas in the country, which means that their figures are an accurate representation of what is happening in our communities.

Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in West Yorkshire, said: “I want to reassure our communities that whilst we know this increase was affected by Covid restrictions being relaxed, we are by no means complacent.

“Both myself and the Mayor are committed to a safe, just and inclusive West Yorkshire, and will continue to monitor the police’s performance and outcomes for victims through regular meetings with the Chief Constable.

“Improving the safety of women and girls remains a key priority as they are disproportionately affected by a number of crimes. The Mayor recently launched her strategy on this theme, and we’ll be working with the police and our community safety partners to encourage long term change.”
