Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe OBE, responds to new Women's Aid report

West Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Alison Lowe OBE, has responded to a new Women’s Aid report highlighting child homicides.

The study released yesterday (Tuesday 24 June) reveals that nationally, over the last nine years, 19 children have been killed by a parent who was also a perpetrator of domestic abuse, where access was granted through formal or informal child contact arrangements.

Nineteen More Child Homicides is the third report in the series by the organisation, uncovering a total of 67 children killed nationally under similar circumstances over the past 30 years.

Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: 

“This is a heartbreaking report and a stark reminder that too many children are still being failed by systems meant to protect them.

“Protecting children and tackling domestic abuse are key priorities, with early intervention and a child-first lens at the heart of our approach.

“We’re strengthening how services work together, with trauma-informed training and working in partnership to ensure robust Domestic Homicide Reviews to deliver real learning and accountability. We also support specialist organisations working with Black, minoritised, and migrant communities.

“Every child deserves to grow up safe and free from fear — and we won’t stop until that’s a reality.”
