The Government have announced changes to pre-charge bail under new provisions collectively known as ‘Kay’s Law’.
The reforms come into force this week and mean police have a duty to take the views of victims into account before releasing someone on bail.
Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “I welcome the changes to bail which will undoubtedly provide greater protection to victims.
“I will be working with the Mayor to monitor how these changes are implemented and used here in West Yorkshire with regular meetings with the Chief Constable.
“The safety of women and girls is a deeply personal issue and a key priority for the Mayor and me. We are doing everything in our power, in partnership with our communities, the police, local authorities and voluntary organisations to improve this situation and bring lasting change.
“Together we can make West Yorkshire a safer place for women and girls.”
