Elland rail station

A new rail station is coming to Elland, improving transport links with the wider region and beyond, including connections to Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford and Manchester.

Development

What is the Elland rail station project?

The new Elland Rail Station and accompanying Access Package are part of our commitment to deliver the Weaver Network – a seamless transport system that connects people with opportunities and supports a thriving West Yorkshire.

The new rail station for Elland is being delivered by Network Rail in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Calderdale Council, improving transport links with the wider region and beyond, including connections to Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford and Manchester.

To support access to the new rail station from Elland town centre and wider areas, including links to and from West Vale, the council is delivering the Elland Access Package, creating easier and safer walking and cycling connections.

Together, the station and access package will improve access to jobs, education and opportunities. Elland will be more attractive to new businesses and the new links will support existing businesses.

Construction is due to start on Elland Rail Station Access Package in 2026, subject to project approvals.

This will ensure progress is made on this key project before final approval of the station is sought later in 2026.

A new rail station for Elland

The new accessible Elland Rail Station will boost transport links and bring new opportunities by connecting more people with the places they need to go.

It will be built next to the A629 Calderdale Way and close to Lowfields Business Park on the Calder Valley line.

Trains will connect Elland and West Vale to Halifax, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds and Manchester.

Proposals include:

  • Elevated platforms on the embankment
  • Lift, ramp and stepped access from the car park level
  • A 116-space car park
  • Cycle parking
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points
  • A new toucan crossing on Lowfields Way

Elland Access Package

The accompanying Elland Access Package will improve walking and cycling links between Elland Rail Station, the town centre and wider areas including West Vale.

Proposals include:

  • A new walking and cycling bridge over the River Calder, and Calder & Hebble Navigation
  • A second new bridge connecting West Vale with Elland via the canal towpath
  • General walking and cycle network improvements including new crossings and wayfinding
  • Widening a stretch of canal towpath on the northern bank of the Calder & Hebble Navigation to continue cycle route 66 and provide a more direct, safe way to the new rail station
  • Public space improvements at the Calderdale Way underpass and Elland Riverside Park
