Grants for walking, wheeling and cycling in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire Combined Authority has £600,000 available for community organisations to help more people walk, wheel and cycle. Two types of grant are available: Community Grants of up to £5,000 and Active Travel Hub Grants of up to £50,000. Applications open in June 2026.

About the fund

Walking, wheeling and cycling are at the heart of our mission to deliver a better connected West Yorkshire. Our vision is for a region where active travel is the natural choice for short journeys, with routes and infrastructure that make journeys easy and enjoyable.

Walking, wheeling and cycling is sometimes referred to as "active travel". "Wheeling" means using things like wheelchairs, scooters or skateboards for travel.

Many people in West Yorkshire don't have the choice to walk, wheel or cycle because they lack the skills, confidence and other resources required. By providing support, services or community projects, you can help open up the benefits of the Weaver Network to everyone in our region.

This funding supports four goals from our Local Transport Plan: enabling inclusive growth, boosting productivity, improving health and wellbeing, and tackling the climate emergency.

The grants are funded through the £830 million City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by West Yorkshire in 2021 to provide a more integrated and inclusive transport network.

Who can apply

You can apply for a grant if your organisation is one of the following, registered or constituted in the UK:

  • A social enterprise
  • A registered charity
  • A community interest company
  • A private limited by guarantee company with not-for-profit status

Your organisation is not eligible if you are an individual, a sole trader, or an organisation not established in the UK.

All funded activity must take place in West Yorkshire. Your organisation may partner with local activity providers and your local authority.

Before you apply, you must have:

  • A bank account that requires at least two people to sign each cheque or withdrawal
  • Appropriate insurance for any activities you plan to deliver (you will need to provide evidence)
  • A safeguarding policy in place (we will ask to see a copy)

We particularly welcome applications that support people who face barriers to active travel, including disabled people, people on low incomes, and under-represented communities.

Community grants

Community Grants of up to £5,000 are available for smaller grassroots projects that encourage a specific group or audience within the community to walk, wheel or cycle. There is £100,000 available in total for this grant type.

Examples of projects a community grant might support:

  • A series of fun led walks for a group of young carers
  • Upskilling volunteers to offer fix-a-bike sessions in a local park
