Rebuilding confidence and finding a new path - Simon’s Story

Returning to work after a long time away can feel overwhelming - especially when health challenges mean your previous career is no longer an option. Simon’s story shows how the right support can help people move forward with confidence.

A change of direction

We first met Simon in November 2023 at a progression event, where he was focusing on improving his mental health after a long period out of work.

After a successful career in engineering, health issues meant he could no longer return to that role. Unsure what to do next, Simon began exploring his options with support from our team.

At that point, he decided to focus on rebuilding his confidence and updating his skills through Adult Learning courses.

Building towards employment

Simon reconnected with us in May 2025, ready to start applying for jobs. With support from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Employment West Yorkshire program, we helped him:

  • Refine his CV
  • Identify his transferable skills
  • Access suitable job opportunities

In July 2025, Simon applied for a technical training mentor role at a local FE college. With tailored interview preparation, he was able to confidently demonstrate both his technical expertise and his experience supporting others.

A new chapter

Simon was successfully offered the role and started in August 2025. He is now enjoying a job that uses his skills while supporting his health and wellbeing.

Making it possible

Simon’s journey highlights how personalised support can help people:

  • Rebuild confidence
  • Recognise their transferable skills
  • Move into roles better suited to their needs
