From graduate to employment - Eloise’s journey with Employment West Yorkshire

Starting your career after university can feel exciting - but also overwhelming. For many graduates, the step from education into employment is not always straightforward. That’s where the right support, at the right time, can make all the difference. Eloise’s story is a powerful example of how personalised, local support can help people take that crucial next step with confidence.

Finding direction after graduation

After completing her degree in Film Studies, Eloise was ready to begin her career journey but, like many graduates, she faced the challenge of turning her qualifications into a job opportunity.

She joined the West Yorkshire Combined Authorities Employment West Yorkshire programme, which offers free, one-to-one employment support to adults across the region. The service is designed to meet people wherever they are in their journey - whether they’re starting out, changing careers, or returning to work.

Support when it matters most

Shortly after registering, Eloise secured an interview for a social media assistant role at Simply Wigs in Slaithwaite. With this opportunity on the horizon, her first meeting with an adviser focused on exactly what she needed most: targeted interview preparation.

This personalised support helped her:

  • Build confidence ahead of the interview
  • Prepare responses tailored to the specific role
  • Understand how to present her skills and experience effectively

Turning opportunity into success

The impact of this support was immediate.

Following her interview, Eloise successfully secured the role.

Reflecting on her experience, she said: “Without the help preparing for the interview, I don’t think I would have got the job.”

Eloise has now been thriving in her role since July 2025 - turning her passion for media into a career that’s just getting started.

A service that works for real people

Eloise’s story highlights what makes Employment West Yorkshire so effective: personalised, practical support that responds to individual needs at exactly the right time.

Whether it’s interview preparation, CV advice, or exploring training and career options, the programme is designed to empower people to succeed.
